Analysing Student Examples- THE SILENCE

STUDENT FILM- THE SILENCE

clock ticking, rubix cube on table, phone ringing, quiet house, the phone is playing back a voicemail, the money on the counter has blood on it and the dog food has been over filled/piled high, static noise, knife next to money, phone going off msgs, smashed up plates in sink with blood all over, ice cubes everywhere, person hanging, machine looped the voicemail, alarm goes off, car pulls up in the drive, parents are back, credits have clip of dog eating and of clean dishes, at end there's a still shot of tidy bedroom and an automated voicemail response.

representation
- of mental health and the negative effect it can have on someone.

narrative
-There wasn't really a typical narrative, we saw snippets of what had happened in the house so we therefore knew what the parents would see before they actually saw it.

micro elements
-sound- lots of foley sounds have been used in these piece to emphasise the contrast of the silence. The looped voicemail is really the only sound created (diegetic). There's non diegetic music that is also creepy and eyrie which adds to the tension

-mise-en-scene
props- clock, rubix cube, house phone, money, plates that are smashed, a dog, fake blood
location/setting- a normal house.

-editing- it flicks through different shots of objects and went back to the same shot a couple of times. This really shows the big emphasis on the lack of life and how big the silence is.

-performance- still objects just emphasised the lack of movement.

-cinematography- close ups and mid shots all showed us the objects in no particular order to tell us a story. the camera is fixed onto the focus object.

meanings/ messages
- i think that it's showing how you never know what's going on behind closed door as from the inside the house looks normal but we know it isn't and inside is filled with chaos.

I like the use of still shots, focussing in on an object and the lack of sound created by still object and would like to use this in my film.
