Analysing Student Examples- OLD WIVES' TALES

STUDENT FILM- OLD WIVES' TALES

trigger warning to start off, narration with blank screen, montage of old wives tales, a heart beat sound lots of closeups, laughing, muffled sounds emotional storyline, flatline of the heartbeat?, in the end its like its a therapy session, she was telling her story?

representation
- of other cultures beliefs when talking in specifics about stories and tales told to younger generations to stop them doing bad things.

narrative
- at the end it is found out that this is a recount of stories to a therapist, the narrator is actually talking to the therapist and sharing her experiences with old wives tales told to her through her culture in childhood. this makes for an unconventional narrative.

micro elements
-sound- all the sounds are emphasised such as the watermelon chop, the crushed apple and tomato. This emphasis allows the audience to focus on what they are being shown. There is a really creepy soundtrack which makes you feel tense and scared. As well as this at one point the screen is blank and there is a loud heartbeat sound, this makes you feel quite anxious and on edge like most of the other sounds in this film. It's hard to distinguish what is diegetic and non-diegetic as it's a recount directed at the audience.

-mise-en-scene
costumes- the costuming is very basic
props- lots of fruit is used in this to tell the old wives tales in a visual way that we would understand.
location/setting- in a therapists office

-editing- montage of clips from different tales all edited into one piece. There is also a scene that fades in and out to black, mimicking a heartbeat. This technique makes the audience feel tense and uncomfortable.

-performance- vocal delivery of the narration is incredibly important it is telling the story. It is dramatic and creepy and instils a sense of fear . negative thoughts are shown by a creepy voiceover.

-cinematography- Close ups are used for the squishing of objects as it draws us in. We can see lots of detail as well. Over the shoulder shots put us into the scene and immerses the audience.
lighting- a spotlight highlights a specific object and draws attention to the audience.

meanings/ messages
- to highlight generational trauma caused by the passing down of the tales.

I really like the editing techniques used in this and i am inspired for my own film.
