Communicating to The Audience to Create Meaning

HOW WILL YOU USE THE ELEMENTS OF FILM FORM TO CREATE MEANING?

Cinematography including lighting (Making good use of natural light, 3 point lighting, shot types and their function, shot variety, movement, FOCUS).

Editing (pace, match on action, continuity, obeying the 180 degree rule, 4th wall, consider relationship between narrative and editing)

Sound design (use of sound in relation to narrative, sound and emotion, room tone, quality of sound, layering of sound, sound effects.)

Performance (dialogue, character motivation, how you can inform the audience about a character through performance)

Mise-en-scene (costumes inc hair and make-up, props, location, colour design)

WAYS YOU CAN COMMUNICATE IDEAS VISUALLY

  • A montage
  • Time lapse
  • Mood shots - The Weather, Nature, Landscapes
  • Certain materials (eg trash, metal)
  • Mirrors → signifies questions around identity
  • Pull focus
  • Jump cuts → this will disrupt or jar your audience
  • (Show a key scene in) slow motion
  • Colour palette
  • Performance - body language, facial expressions

OTHER STYLISTIC TECHNIQUES TO USE
  • Transition from non diegetic to diegetic music (or vice versa)
  • Use a static / observational camera
  • Use a dolly-zoom
  • Break the 180-degree rule (this will disorientate your audience so only use at the right time)
  • Use silhouettes
  • Use shadows
  • Shoot in 4:3 ratio
  • Split screen
  • Position a character behind railings (or similar) to suggest being trapped
  • Use a push-in shot (not a zoom!) to create dramatic tension
